Plot Summary: In the near future, plastic memories will take place in a city in which people live with androids that look just like people and that have human feelings and recollection. The Giftia, an advanced android model with the most human-like qualities of any model, has been introduced by SAI Corp, the largest android development company. It's a catch, though. The life cycle of a Giftia is determined in advance and a Giftia can not live up to 81,920 hours (approximately 9 years and 4 months). They become so identified as hikers when their expiry date passes, it induces disintegration of identity, memory loss and violence outbreaks. Walkers can no longer remember their owners, only act on intuition. As a consequence, the terminal facilities have been set up to retrieve Giftias from their owners who have been close to the end of their lives and to remove the memories of the Giftias.
In order to do this job, the workers of the terminal job in teams containing a person (known as a spotter) and an employee of Giftia (known as a 'marker'). The tale follows the work of such a team at SAI Corp's Terminal Service One office, Tsukasa Mizugaki, the human protagonist, and Isla, a Giftia. Slowly, the relationship grows and as both of them slowly fall in love, it appears that Isla is reaching the end of its very lives.
